Good morning, Medford, Thursday, July 9

Happy Thursday, everybody. Let's talk about doing nothing. And, then we'll get to what's happening in Medford today.

When I sit down to write the newsletter each night, my focus for the happenings is always on events and activities. And, Medford is a great place for that. There is never a shortage of wonderful things to do.

But, in the wee hours of this morning, as I was finishing this newsletter, the thought occurred to me that it might be nice to talk about places to go to do pretty much nothing. To just sit, to close your eyes and listen to the birds, to stroll without a destination in mind. And, Medford is also a great place for that.

The Brooks Estate, for example, is 50 acres, and while there are trails you can follow, there is also a pond where you can just sit and listen and be.

On the other end of the spectrum is the Middlesex Fells, which spans several communities in addition to Medford and includes 2,200 acres of forest and wetlands. You can join a group hike, learn about invasive plants, or even help pick up dog poop. But, with that many acres, there are plenty of spots to just hang out and let nature do its thing around you.

And, then there's the Mystic River and lakes.

Of course, there are many benefits to being active, but the same is true for taking some time to do nothing.

One of my favorite do-nothings is to go to a wetland and just listen, even for just a few minutes, to the sounds of frogs. What is yours? Email me at gottaknowmedford@gmail.com.
