Good morning, Medford, Monday, July 6
Happy Monday, everybody. Election season is upon us, and we've got two candidates forums to let you know about. We also have a look at what's happening in Medford today.
We're thankful the heat wave has ended. The next few days will be cooler, and there's some rain in the forecast for today and tomorrow.
We've got a couple of election-related events to let you know about this morning.
Mystic Valley Voters Forum will host a candidates forum Tuesday, July 7, at 6 p.m. in the Bonsignore Room of the Medford Public Library.
Four of the candidates in the Democratic primary for the 2nd Middlesex State Senate seat will participate in a moderated round-table discussion on local and state issues relevant to the race:
- Burhan Azeem, vice-mayor of Cambridge
- Erika Uyterhoeven, state representative, 27th Middlesex District (Somerville)
- Christine Barber, state representative, 34th Middlesex District (Somerville and Medford)
- Matt McLaughlin, city councilor, Somerville Ward 1
The organizers said in a press release, “The forum will spotlight the hotly contested 2nd Middlesex State Senate Democratic Primary, where five popular candidates vie for the seat of newly retired State Senator Pat Jehlen, making it the most crowded state legislature primary in the Commonwealth.”
The Mystic Valley Voters Forum is a collaboration of community members from a variety of civic organizations based in and around the city of Medford, including Safe Medford, Mystic Mashup Indivisible, Medford for Palestine, and Our Revolution Medford.
The fifth Democratic candidate is Tom Hopcroft, of Winchester, and he will be participating, along with the other four candidates, at a forum on July 16, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., at Somerville High School, 81 Highland Ave. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.
That forum is also being hosted by a coalition of community organizations, including Neighbors in Action, the Union Square, Gilman Square, and Davis Square neighborhood councils, Somerville Community Corporation, Somerville Stands Together, and the Somerville Community Land Trust.
