Good morning, Medford, Monday, July 13

We hope your Monday is off to a good start, and if you're just getting home from work, we hope you have some good down-time. This morning, we're talking about a Medford resident playing a key role for a new Holocaust museum.

Our break from the high temperatures is coming to an end. The next few days are expected to be in the 90s, with little rain in sight. Be safe and check on your neighbors who may need help.

We're starting this Monday morning with congratulations for Medford resident Ann Welch.

Welch has been named chief operating officer for the new Holocaust Museum Boston, which is being built on Tremont Street across from the Boston Common and is scheduled to open in spring 2027.

“It’s an honor to help bring this important institution to Boston,” Welch said in a statement. “I am thrilled to join Holocaust Museum Boston at such a consequential stage in its development and to help build the operational foundation that will support its educational mission for generations to come.”

Northeastern grads Jody Kipnis and Todd Ruderman co-founded the Holocaust Legacy Foundation and Holocaust Museum Boston.

“Ann joins Holocaust Museum Boston at a pivotal moment in our development,” Kipnis said in a statement. “Her deep experience in nonprofit leadership and organizational operations will be invaluable as we move from building a museum to preparing to operate one.”

The groundbreaking took place at the end of May, and you can follow the project's progress at https://www.holocaustlegacyfoundation.org/.

By the way, after I wrote last Thursday about all the places Medford has where you can go to do pretty much nothing, I asked a friend what her favorite do-nothing is, she said, "I’ll be totally honest… it’s scrolling through animal videos on social. I’ve been trying to train the algorithm that I basically only want to see animals!"

Girls on the Run has a summer camp coming up in Medford. Camp GOTR runs July 27-30, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day, at Hormel Stadium. The program is for girls entering grades 3-5 this fall.

Chief Program Officer Caitlin Barrett said the program is “for girls of all abilities to develop self-confidence and learn life skills they can use now and as they grow. Girls will enjoy building friendships in a fun and inclusive setting that includes interactive lessons, being physically active, and expressing creativity through arts and crafts and storytelling.”

The cost for Medford residents is $125 for the week. Barrett said financial aid is available for anyone who needs it, and there is an option to extend to a full-day camp through Medford Recreation.

Will Dowd covered the first debate between Sen. Ed Markey and challenger Seth Moulton:

In first Democratic primary debate, Markey and Moulton measure power differently
The exchange between Ed Markey and Seth Moulton became a test of two political theories: one built on showing up in rooms across Massachusetts, the other on relationships that can deliver money, endorsements and results.
