Good morning, Medford, Monday, August 17

The Schanda family will be closing the Paul Revere Restaurant at the end of this month. It was not a decision they made lightly after over two decades in West Medford.

We were sad to learn the Paul Revere Restaurant in West Medford will be closing permanently at the end of August after over two decades in business.

The restaurant has been an important part of the community serving up breakfast – not just any breakfast, but a big breakfast! – from its wedge-shaped space at the corner of High and Warren streets. And, it's been a stop for Paul Revere when he makes his famous ride through the city during it's Patriots' Day celebration, "Revere's Ride - Medford Pride."

I had the pleasure of meeting owners Joseph Schanda, Sr., and Joseph Schanda, Jr., during this year's event. Joe Sr. watched from the doorway as Revere, played by National Lancers Brigadier General Richard Reale, Jr., spoke to the crowd gathered out front. Joe Jr. was talking to people in the crowd. Everybody was taking pictures.

The family posted to Instagram that the restaurant will be open through August 30 and that they hope people will stop in to say goodbye in person. "For many years, this restaurant has been more than a business," the Schandas wrote, "it has been a community and a family." They cited an unexpected serious medical condition and retirement as the reasons for their decision.

Our GKM family wishes the best for the Schanda family as they prepare for the next chapter in their lives. We plan to stop in for breakfast some morning over the next week or so. We will let you know, in case you want to join us.
