Good morning, Medford, Tuesday, August 11
Happy Tuesday, everybody. Join us in congratulating the Medford kids who participated in the Middlesex Sheriff's Youth Public Safety Academy. Then, check out today's happenings and stay tuned for an opinion piece about the election and a story on Medford reactions to MBTA proposed bus changes.
The Middlesex Sheriff’s Office (MSO) submitted two photos of Medford youth who graduated from, or who otherwise participated in, the MSO's Youth Public Safety Academy (YPSA). One is above, and the other is just before the list of happenings for today.
Like the Medford Junior Police Academy, the YPSA is designed to give students experiences and skills that will serve them throughout their lives. It is open to all Middlesex County kids ages 8-12, and children ages 13-15 can serve as counselors in training. All told, there are five 1-week sessions to accommodate everyone, and there is a graduation ceremony at the end of each week.
Medford youth participated August 3-7 in a group that included over 100 cadets, mostly from Arlington, Burlington, and Malden, in addition to Medford. They learned about law enforcement, fire safety, emergency preparedness, hydration, and pedestrian safety, saw K9s in action, and participated in team activities.
In his press release, Sheriff Peter Koutoujian said, “Every week, it's incredible to watch these young people step outside their comfort zones, support one another and discover all they are capable of. YPSA is about more than learning about public safety. It’s about building confidence, developing leadership skills and creating memories they will carry with them long after camp ends.”
Congratulations to all the cadets.
It's going to be another hot one out there today, with temperatures predicted to be in the high 80s and only a slight possibility of rain. So stay safe.

A physical therapist will discuss the factors that contribute to dizziness and balance issues, what you can do to decrease your risk of falling, and exercises and activities to incorporate into your daily life. Playgroups at the Park from 9 to 11 a.m. at Carr Park. Hosted by Medford Family Network, the event features art, music, and movement activities, parachute play, bubbles, balls, and storytelling.
Baby Lapsit at 9:30 a.m. at Medford Public Library. Drop-in storytime with songs, rhymes, and gentle movement activities for babies up to 24 months old and parents and caregivers.
Maternal Journaling Workshop from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Arts Collaborative Medford with midwife, artist, and mother Nerida Ackland. Session is designed to be a creative outlet for some of the new feelings and challenges experienced in pregnancy and new parenthood. No experience necessary. Sketchbook provided, or bring your own. Non-crawling age infants welcome. Register.
Babes in the Woods Hike from 10 to 11:30 a.m. with Friends of the Fells for caregivers/parents carrying babies. This is an adult-paced hike and is not recommended for young children who walk. Meet at the Flynn Rink. Register in advance. (There is also a Babes in the Woods Hike happening on Wednesday, same time and place.)
High School Building Committee Construction Manager at Risk (CMR) Prequalification Subcommittee meeting at 3 p.m. at Medford High School. The meeting is in-person only. On the agenda: review and scoring of CMR statements of qualifications.
Skill Issues at 3:30 p.m. at Medford Public Library for teens in middle school and high school to learn new skills. Each month, the session will focus on a different skill, anything from sewing a button to managing finances. Registration required.
Family concert from 5 to 7 p.m. at McGlynn Elementary School playground. Children's activities start at 5 p.m. Concert with "The Ooch Experience" starts at 6 p.m.
Fiber Craft Night from 6 to 8 p.m. at Medford Public Library for adults and teens 16+ to work on their own project. All skill levels welcome. An in-house expert will be available to answer questions.
MythBusters Seminar: "Why You Think You Hate Gin... and Why You Really Don't" from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Kappy's Medford. Through guided tastings, discover the wide range of botanical styles and learn what actually gives gin its flavor. Purchase tickets in advance.
Veteran and First Responder Recovery Group meets at 7 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Medford. All veterans and first responders are welcome on a drop-in basis.
Trivia Night from 7 to 9 p.m. at Medford Brewing. Teams of 2 to 6 players will compete in a traditional 6-round trivia quiz.
