Good morning, Medford, Friday, April 24

Road and sidewalk repairs are in the works, and in the meantime, here is a calendar of events taking place in Medford Friday through Sunday.

Road and sidewalk repairs are in the works. The mayor's office announced yesterday that the city will allocate $3.5 million in federal and state funding to do the work. You will hear more about this in the coming weeks, but the work is slated to take place this spring.

Road and sidewalk work will take place on the following:

  • Willis Avenue
  • Bowen Avenue
  • Golden Avenue
  • Arlington Street
  • Brookings Street
  • Tainter Street
  • Spring Street at Central Avenue (sidewalk work only)
  • East Border Circle
  • Park Street

National Grid will be repaving on the following:

  • Higgins Avenue
  • Wheeler Avenue
  • Medford Street (Albion to Broadway)
  • Central Avenue
  • Sunnyside Terrace
  • Belleview Terrace
  • Hicks Avenue
  • Earl Avenue
  • Westwood Road
  • Washington Street

Also, the city will seal cracks as a preventive measure on a number of roads:

Tween Doodle Weaving from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Medford Public Library for tweens in grades 5-8 to learn the basics of weaving and make a free-form wall hanging. Supplies will be provided. Registration required.

Poetry Club with Vijaya Sundaram from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Medford Public Library. Read and discuss the work of great poets, while crafting and performing your own work.

MakerSpace Drop-In from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Medford Public Library for adults and teens 16+ to work on a personal project or learn how to use the space and equipment.

Go Mustangs! Varsity boys tennis takes on Revere at home at 10 a.m.

Live music with The Broken Heels at 8 p.m. at The Ford Tavern featuring pop and rock hits from the 80s to today.

"A Journal of the Plague Year" at 8 p.m. in Balch Arena Theater at Tufts.

Walking and birding at the Brooks Estate from dawn to dusk. The estate has 50 acres of protected open space to explore.

Stoic Arts: A Conference on Impermanence, Beauty, and Resilience from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the Granoff Music Center at Tufts. Registration is requested.

The Real Story of the Cinco de Mayo: Theater Fun and Cultural Cuisine Spanish Learning Program at 9 a.m. at Medford Public Library. Learn a little conversational Spanish and have breakfast. Registration required.

Beginner Knitting 2.0: Shaping from 9 to 11 a.m. at Medford Public Library for adults and teens 13+. You know how to knit, purl, cast on, and bind off. Now, learn how to shape your work. There is homework to do before class. Registration required.

Drop-In Playtime from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Medford Family Network Family Center.

Rummage Sale from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at The Unitarian Universalist Church of Medford. Admission is $4 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Admission is free from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

TreesMedford Arbor Day Sapling Giveaway from 9:30 to 11 a.m. in the cafe space at Medford Public Library.

Family Story Time at 10 a.m. at Medford Public Library for children ages 3-7 to explore new concepts with books and songs.

National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Medford Police Station. You can drop off unwanted pills, tablets, capsules, cough medicine, other liquid medications, and prescription medications. (Do not drop off needles/syringes, medical devices or instruments, thermometers, etc.)

Independent Bookstore Day celebration from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Moon and Back Bookstore. Freebies and activities and the kickoff of the North of Boston Book Trail Passport Challenge.

Aging Together from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Medford Public Library. A gathering for older people who live in the Medford area to: meet neighbors, learn about resources related to aging, develop interest groups, and enjoy each others company.

Shabbat Sing-Along at 11:30 a.m. at Temple Shalom of Medford. Singing and dancing for children up to age 7 with a parent. Stay for Kiddush lunch afterwards.

Creative Kids: Decorate, Plant & Grow from 12 to 2 p.m. at The Ford Tavern for children ages 5-12 to decorate a pot, plants seeds, and take home something to grow. Purchase tickets on Eventbrite.

Did you know?

  • Street sweeping will happen in zone 4 today, and there will be no parking allowed on the streets in this zone from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Here is the list of streets in zone 4.
  • Medford-based employers are invited to participate in the Medford Youth Summit on May 2, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., at the Andrews Middle School. The summit is a job fair for youths ages 14-17. If your Medford-based business needs to fill a summertime position or needs a volunteer, you can sign up. Email Matisse Monty at mmonty@medford-ma.gov for information. The deadline is April 28.
