We want to take a moment today to honor the Medford residents and their family members who are serving in the U.S. armed forces or will be joining soon.

Yesterday, the city held its annual Memorial Day observances at Oak Grove Cemetery, and City Councilor Justin Tseng spoke on behalf of Councilor Matt Leming, who has been deployed from the U.S. Navy Reserves.

Also, yesterday, the daughter of Veterans Services Director Veronica Shaw, who is a retired Army veteran, gave remarks. Constance Shaw said she will be following in many family members' footsteps, including those of her older brother who is on active duty, and will be reporting for basic training soon.

And, Medford High School Senior Matthew Fils was honored recently during some pre-graduation ceremonies because he is leaving for boot camp soon and will not be at the June 4 Commencement.

We hold in our hearts all Medford residents and their family members who are serving or who will be reporting for duty.

While it rained, and at points quite heavily, during yesterday's Memorial Day observances, everyone made the best of it. Medford was not to be deterred from honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, nor were they deterred from talking about all the ways in which this holiday is important to them. We will have a story and photos online this morning.

By the way, members of the Medford High School Marching Band, who performed during the ceremony, were spotted afterwards marching in the rain back to the high school.
