Happy Friday, everyone. It's time for the GKM monster 3-day calendar, plus we have a look at some things coming up in August. And, it is not too early to make sure you're registered to vote in the primary.
August is shaping up to be wicked busy. Maybe it's always that way, and it just catches me by surprise every year.
There's the National Night Out event being hosted by Medford Police, auditions for the Mystic Players Revival production of "Mean Girls," a Medicare presentation at the library, the school supply drive leading up to the back-to-school event, Hoops and Hope at Dugger Park, and the Medford Jazz Festival.
We just received an email about the lineup for the Medford Jazz Festival, which is taking place August 14, 15, and 16 at West Medford Community Center. Vertigo Trio and Reese Pike Trio perform on Friday. Farayi Malek Quartet and Mina Cho Trio will perform outside on Saturday, weather permitting. Sunday, also outside if the weather cooperates, there will be three acts: Nicko Guerrero Trio, Berklee’s Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice, and The Ally Project.
Also, we have the primary coming up, with early voting starting on August 22, which is also the last day to register to vote. If you have any question about whether you are registered, now is the time to check. Click here to see the full election calendar.

Senior Center Activities: Walking Club at 9:30 a.m.; Chinese English class at 11 a.m.; Lunches will be grab-n-go from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- Veterans Coffee Hour at 10 a.m. with Leo Mingace and Medford Veterans Director Veronica Shaw. Coffee, resources, and information for any veteran or family member.
- Tex Mex Festival from 12 to 3 p.m. A celebration of the food, music, dancing, and clothing of the southwest U.S.
Sisters in Sweat Exercise Group at 9:30 a.m. at West Medford Community Center. Walking and other low-impact activities for seniors.
Melt the Ice Sensory Play at 10 a.m. at Medford Public Library for children ages 3-7 to play with ice and use tools and supplies to try to melt it. Registration required.
Paddle Boston – Medford from 12 to 8 p.m. at the Condon Shell, weather permitting. (Saturday and Sunday hours are 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.) Walk-up anytime to rent a boat. Limited advanced reservations also available. Last boat goes out at 7 p.m. All boats must be returned by 8 p.m.
Outdoor Play with Miss Cindy - All Ages! from 2 to 4 p.m. at Magoun Park, sponsored by Medford Family Network. Parent/child interactive activities including circle time, problem solving activities, games we used to play.
Custom Keycaps Drop In at 3:30 p.m. at Medford Public Library for teens in middle school and high school to make their own keycaps for a mechanical keyboard (not for laptops) or just to have as a piece of art. All materials will be provided.
YES STEM: Engineer a Flotation Device at 3:30 p.m. at Medford Public Library for kids ages 5+ to experiment with flotation in a stem activity designed by the Museum of Science.
MakerSpace Drop-In from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Medford Public Library for adults and teens age 16+ to work on personal projects or ask the in-house expert about how to use the space and equipment.
(Hot) Tamales: Home Is A Feeling opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. at Arts Collaborative Medford with artists Ethan LeBlanc and Luz Palou García. Featuring sculpture, painting, performance, and printmaking, the exhibition reflects on the artists' Cajun, Mexican, and Nicaraguan heritage while considering the many ways home can be experienced, remembered, and reimagined.
DJ Stamz from 6 to 9 p.m. on the roof deck and patio at The Great American Beer Hall.
Young Adult Dance Night from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the St. Joseph Church gym. Hosted by Mary, Queen of Peace and North End Young Adults, this is a beginner-friendly evening of social dancing basics. No partner or experience necessary. RSVP.
Smoking Popes 35th Anniversary Tour, with Radiator Hospital, beginning at 7 p.m. at Deep Cuts.
Saturday, July 25
Family Story Time at 10 a.m. at Medford Public Library for children ages 3-7 to explore new concepts with books and songs. Parents and caregivers are welcome to join in.
3D Printer Badge Class at 10 a.m. at Medford Public Library for adults to get certified to use the Library's MakerBot Sketch printers. Registration required.
Chess Club from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Medford Public Library. Medford Chess Club meets in the Cafe Space at the Library on Saturdays at 10 a.m. in July and August.
Spanish Fun Time for children ages 1-4 at 10:30 a.m. at Medford Public Library. Children are encouraged to fully engage with the movement and games and to use as much Spanish vocabulary as possible. Registration required.
Spanish Fun Time for children ages 5-11 at 11 a.m. at Medford Public Library. Registration required.
Brews, Beats & Bites with Medford Brewing from 1 to 5 p.m. at Clippership Pop-Up Park. Family-friendly event with live music, food trucks, and craft beer.
"Don't Hug the Quokka" storytime at 2:30 pm. at Moon and Back Bookstore.
Funk Safari performs from 5 to 8 p.m. in the outdoor beer garden at The Great American Beer Hall.
Live music at Deep Cuts beginning at 7 p.m. The lineup: Baabes (garage punk); Joudy (album release, heavy garage rock); Capo Regime (alt rock); Parachute Club (grunge rock).
Summer Movie Night at 7:30 p.m. at Tufts Park, Field 1, behind the school. Lawn activities and music begin at 7:30 p.m. The movie, "Elemental," begins at 8:30 p.m. Bring a blanket, lawn chairs, drinks. There will be free popcorn.
Sunday, July 26
Mystic Walkers at 11 a.m. at Hormel Stadium. All ages and abilities are welcome to join. The group will decide where the walk will go.
Kier Byrnes Freedom Runners at 11 a.m. starting at Medford Brewing. Choose from several different loops or create your own. All are welcome.
Invasive Plant Task Force informational walk with Wilderscaping from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. along the Clippership Connector. Meet at 81 Riverside Ave. Learn about invasive plants, including tree of heaven, threatening biodiversity along the Mystic River corridor, and learn how to ID them.
First Baptist Church Coffee Hour at 12 p.m. Informal coffee hour in Memorial Hall.
Medford Historical Society and Museum is open on Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. Current exhibit is, "1776 and beyond," but there are also many other resources to explore.
Mending Workshop from 2 to 4 p.m. at Arts Collaborative Medford with Mystic Makers Space. Learn how to repair ripped seams, repair tears, patch worn areas, how to hem and how to replace buttons. All sewing materials will be provided. Bring something that needs to be mended. Register in advance.
