Good morning, Medford, Monday, June 1
Medford has a number of reasons to celebrate this week.
An air of celebration envelopes Medford this week. Medford High School, the Voc Tech, and Curtis Tufts seniors are preparing for graduation and getting ready to take the next big steps in their lives. Curtis Tufts seniors will walk on June 3, and the MHS/Voc Tech commencement will be the following day, June 4. Also happening on June 3 is the Pride flag raising and festival at City Hall that will include music and a pet parade.
And, this is also spirit week. The "We Heart MFN Spirit Week" kicked off yesterday and continues through June 6. It's a week-long celebration of the Medford Family Network and its long-time director, Marie Cassidy.
Friends of the Medford Family Network is sponsoring Spirit Week and has partnered with local businesses and organizations. And, sprinkled amongst the many and varied activities and events will be opportunities for the community to pitch in to support MFN.
The Friends describe the Spirit Week this way:
"From May 31st to June 6th, we are painting the city purple with a week-long celebration featuring over 20 events for families, alumni, and supporters of all ages. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful morning of community acupuncture, a high-energy playground meetup, a nostalgic storytime with Miss Marie, or a night of line dancing at the Beer Hall, there is something for everyone."
This celebration comes as MFN has lost a significant amount of its funding and, as Nell reported recently, officials are continuing to work to make up that shortfall.
Before we get to the events happening today in Medford, here's a reminder that the NAACP branch that represents the Mystic Valley area is hosting a talk tonight with Dr. Eddie Glaude, Jr., the author of "America, U.S.A. – How Race Shadow's the Nation's Anniversaries."
