Trees are in the news today. The city has formed a new committee "to promote a diverse, healthy and sustainable urban forest," and the non-profit organization TreesMedford is hosting a site-prep event for the Tufts Park mini-forest.

But, first, Memorial Day. The community is gathering on Monday, May 25, at 10 a.m. in Oak Grove Cemetery for Memorial Day observances to honor and remember the service men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice. Medford Gold Star Families will be honored during the ceremony. If you would like to be included, contact Veronica Shaw at Veterans Services at 781-393-2505 or by email to vshaw@medford-ma.gov.

The mayor yesterday announced that an advisory Tree Committee has been created and that Medford residents ages 15 and older are invited to fill out an application. It will be a nine-member, volunteer committee, and the mayor will make the initial appointments.

The committee will advise the tree warden on issues related to trees on public property and may assist with public hearings, review tree maintenance plans, and promote equity in tree planting across the city.

On Saturday, TreesMedford will host a soil-prep event at Tufts Park from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Volunteers are needed to help with tilling, soil amendments, and fence assembly to get the site ready for the planting of a mini forest.

One more thing before we get to the calendar: don't forget about the Beach Boys Ticket Giveaway. The band is playing the Chevalier Theatre on May 31st at 8 p.m., and one lucky fan will receive two free tickets to the show. For a chance to win, fill out the form below with your name and email. The winner will be chosen on May 28 at noon:

Have a great weekend, and we will see you on Monday at Oak Grove Cemetery for Memorial Day observances.

In case you missed it

A Medford resident is concerned that the rush to install many traffic-calming measures across the city will have unintended consequences for traffic and public safety:

OPINION: Traffic-calming measures well intentioned but potentially dangerous
A Medford resident argues that rapid expansion of traffic-calming measures may be well intentioned, but, “the cumulative effect is creating a driving environment that is increasingly frustrating, congested, difficult to navigate, and potentially dangerous in unintended ways.”
