The following was submitted by the office of Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn.

Medford Police Chief Jack Buckley resumed his duties as chief of the department on Wednesday, November 5th, following a five-month medical leave period. Provisional Police Chief Paul Covino returns to his role as captain.

“I am so thankful that Chief Buckley has recovered from his illness and is ready to resume his role as chief of our Police Department,” Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn said. “His experience, leadership, and integrity are unmatched, and I know his fellow officers are eagerly awaiting his return. For the past five months, Captain Covino has done a great job as provisional chief and the entire community thanks him for leading the department in the interim.”

Earlier this year, Chief Buckley experienced extreme fatigue and sinus symptoms that led to a diagnosis of an autoimmune disease. According to his doctors, the condition is manageable and has no effect on his ability to fulfill his duties.

“These past few months have been difficult, both from a professional and personal standpoint, but thanks to the help of my medical team and my family, I am now fully prepared to resume my duties and get back to leading this department,” Chief Buckley said. “Thank you to the mayor for her support throughout my medical leave, to Captain Covino for seamlessly stepping into the role in my absence, and to the entire department for offering their support and maintaining their commitment to the community. I am so excited to be back and look forward to all of the important work ahead.”
