The Mustang defense just couldn’t contain Marcos Pineda Thursday night.

The junior tight end broke in on a mammoth 60-yard touchdown run, as Somerville (5-2), stymied Medford, 14-6, at Hormel Stadium.

With the loss, coach John Curley’s club fell to 1-3.

Medford appeared in the thick of things from the opening kickoff but was unable to clamp down defensively on an opportunistic Somerville club. The Highlanders came from behind, cashing in on a pair of quick touchdown strikes on its first two possessions to shift the tenor of the game.

The Mustangs offense gained ground early. Sophomore running back Darian Lindor and senior tailback Guilherme Martins traded the pigskin on several short runs getting deep in Somerville territory. Samuel Dieurestil took it from there. The Medford wide receiver caught a pass from senior quarterback Travers Moodie in full stride. Catching the ball at the 30, the senior stormed in for the 45-yard touchdown, giving Medford the 6-0 edge.

Somerville returned fire immediately, tying the game less than 90 seconds later. Junior quarterback Ares Osiris Beal led the comeback connecting on a short pass to Ryan Louis. The junior receiver found an open lane, rolling 65-yards to pay dirt, knotting the game at 6-6. Medford managed to block the extra point kick, keeping the game tied.

The Highlander defense kept close tabs on Medford, keeping them at midfield to end the first quarter.

Sensing a momentum shift, Somerville turned things up a notch in the second stanza. Pineda took a direct snap powering his way down the left sidelines on a 60-yard end zone jaunt to expand the lead to 12-6. The burly tight end capped the scoring, busting through on the ensuing two-point conversion run, building the 14-6 Somerville lead.

That was all the offense the Highlanders would need, keeping Medford at midfield for the remainder of the half.

Somerville dominated the third quarter, embarking on a time-consuming, 16-play, 83-yard drive. Medford’s defense bent but did not break. Martins and company held firm, ending Somerville’s long run at the six.

Medford tried to battle back, getting as close as the 12 midway through the fourth quarter. Louis ended the comeback hopes intercepting a Moodie pass with 2:01 remaining and sealing the Somerville victory.
