Medford High School will re-open tomorrow, Tuesday, Oct. 6 after a sewage backup closed the building this morning.
All classes, activities, programs, and events will be held as previously scheduled on Tuesday.
The building was evacuated shortly after 11 a.m. on Oct. 5 when a strong sewer smell was detected in the B2 hallway. The Medford Fire Department was called and the building evacuated.
Medford Public Schools spokesman Will Pipicelli said the School Department called in a drain company to identify and unclog the sewer backup.
“A contracted cleaning company is cleaning up the sewage in the MHS mechanical room and mitigating the smell in the affected areas of the building,” Pipicelli said, in a written statement. “The Medford fire, police, and water departments were also on-site during the day to safely oversee the situation.
“Thank you to our MPS staff members and facilities team, first responders and our contracted draining, cleaning and transportation partners for their response to today’s sudden situation,” he continued. “Additionally, thank you to our students, staff, and caregivers for their patience and understanding exiting the building in a safe and timely manner.”
MHS students and staff, along with the Medford Family Network and Kids Corner daycare, were safely dismissed for the day. All other schools proceeded with a normal school day.
Pipicelli said Oct. 5 will still count towards the 180-day state requirement and will not have to be made up at a later date.
“We look forward to welcoming everyone back into the building on Tuesday morning,” he added.
