CHELSEA – Guilherme Martins saddled up the offense Friday night.

The Mustangs senior running back rushed for a pair of touchdowns, including a pivotal third quarter strike that put the game away, as Medford clipped Chelsea 22-6.

With the win, coach John Curley’s squad improves to 2-5, snapping a four-game losing streak in the process.

“We’re fighting for wins and it was a team effort all-around,” said Curley. “We finally played four quarters. That’s what football is all about. You’ve got to play until the final whistle blows.”

Medford took the initiative, establishing an early lead on their first possession. They continued to pace the attack building a 14-0 cushion by the end of the first quarter. The defense bent but didn’t break, holding a slim 14-6 lead at halftime.

“We always talk about setting the tone, and that’s what we came out and did,” said Medford quarterback Travers Moodie. “We were a first-half team for the first time all year. We set the tone and that gave us the momentum the whole game.”

Medford appeared ready from the opening snap. Senior Brendan Nobre pounced on a Chelsea fumble on the kickoff, putting the Mustangs in prime position. Martins took it from there. The fleet-footed running back bolted 25 yards to pay dirt, giving Medford the early lead.

Medford’s defensive line didn’t budge, holding Chelsea to just five yards on their ensuing drive. Meanwhile, Martins continued to gain substantial ground bolting 32-yards into the red zone.

A pair of penalty flags pushed Medford back, but it was no problem for Moodie. The Mustangs quarterback connected with Samuel Dieurestil on a 25-yard TD reception. Dieurestil pulled down the pigskin while evading a Chelsea defender inside the right corner of the end zone, giving Medford the 12-0 lead.

“That’s my guy,” said Moodie. “When (Sam) gets open I’m going to give him the ball.”

Curley concurred.

“Our play action was very good,” said Curley. “Travers has been working all week on that. It was a very good set up. Good fake, nice roll in the pocket and toss to Sammy. It was a very good draw by Sammy catching that.”

Martins added the two-point conversion run, increasing Medford’s lead to 14-0 by the end of the first quarter.

Chelsea managed to bounce back early in the second stanza. Waleed Faith picked off a Moodie pass, returning the interception for the touchdown, cutting the deficit to 14-6. The Red Devils continued to threaten, recovering the on-sides kick. But Medford didn’t panic, holding Chelsea at midfield while maintaining the 14-6 lead at halftime.

The Mustangs managed to put the game away in the third quarter. Moodie found Dieurestil again with a 40-yard bomb to the 11. Martins was on the move just two plays later, marching in for his second touchdown of the game grabbing the 20-6 lead.

“Guil is an animal,” said Moodie. “He’s great.”

Curley agreed.

“Guil was all over the field,” said Curley. “He did a very good job on offense, runs hard all night, and played pretty well on defense. I think the defense overall played pretty well. I don’t think [Chelsea] had 100 yards on offense, so I think overall the whole defense did a really good job.”

The Medford coach was quick to credit the tireless work of his coaching staff for getting his team up to speed.

“I have seven-eight coaches that come to the football field,” he said. “They don’t get paid for what they do, and it's awesome having them give their time to the kids.”

“It was a team effort,” said Moodie. “It all starts with the coaches. We can’t do anything without them. It’s all about the guys around me and the coaches for sure.”

Medford returns home to host Saugus, Thursday, Oct. 30, at Hormel Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m.
