Manhole fires shut down Medford Square
National Grid is on the scene and local businesses are being evacuated. Police ask that everyone stay clear of the area
Medford Square has been shut down and businesses evacuated after a series of manhole fires broke out in the area, late Saturday afternoon, June 27, 2026. As of 6 p.m. National Grid will also shut down power to the area.
In a citywide alert Police Captain Barry Clemente said the impacted area extends up Forest Street to Lawrence Road, and from Riverside Avenue to River Street. Clemente said the shutdown has been extended to the Winthrop Street rotary as well.
Clemente said the businesses were being evacuated as a precaution as it is an active and ongoing incident. Vehicle and pedestrian traffic will be diverted from the area, and the public is asked to avoid the Square altogether and use alternate routes until further notice.
"National Grid electric is on the scene, as well as an increased police presence" Clemente said, adding that everyone's cooperation is appreciated.
