Patriots' Day and School Vacation Week are just up ahead. Here's what's happening.

April vacation is just around the corner. Schools will be closed the week of April 20-24, and there are a number of events planned by the city, the Medford Police Department, and the Recreation Department for children and their families.

On Monday, April 20, the city will celebrate Patriots' Day with Revere's Ride – Medford Pride. It starts at 10:15 a.m. at City Hall with the dedication of the Sarah Bradlee Fulton statue, which has been years in the making. Then there will be festivities for all ages in Medford Square at 11 a.m. Around noon, Paul Revere arrives on horseback and will stop at Captain Hall’s former home at 43 High Street and the Paul Revere Restaurant at 447 High Street.

On Tuesday, April 21, Medford Police welcome individuals with autism spectrum disorder and other developmental and/or intellectual disabilities and their families for Community Inclusion Day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Police Station. This is an opportunity to meet first responders and learn about emergency services in a safe and welcoming environment. Food will be provided.

On Thursday, April 23, Medford Police welcome kids to the station for Video Game Day. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., kids can meet the officers and play video games. Food will be provided.

Medford Police are teaming up with the Rec. Department to hold the Hoops and Heroes Basketball League for girls and boys in grades 3-8. No experience is necessary. This is an opportunity to learn the game of basketball. The league starts on April 26 and runs on Sundays through June 14.

Here are some other programs that will be run by the Rec. Department during school vacation week:

  • Paint the Ice at LoConte Rink Sunday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Families will receive a box of paint to create artwork on the ice. No skating experience is necessary and the event is open to children ages 3 and up.
  • Parkour Generations April 21-24 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at Tufts Park. Climbing, strength and conditioning exercises for kids ages 7-13. Register and fill out the waiver.
  • Battle Robots April 21-24 from 9 a.m. to noon for kids ages 7-12. Kids will build and customize battle robots and then participate in a competition. No experience necessary. Registration required.
  • Lifeguard training April 21-23 for ages 15 and up. Registration required.
  • Public skating at LoConte Rink April 21-24 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Now, back to today. There are an extraordinary number of events and activities taking place today, from story-times to author Adam Kinzinger speaking at Tufts to several important city meetings and the presentation of the economic assessment report.

Senior Center activities: MBTA Charlie Card support and tech help at 9 a.m. - Call ahead; Zumba Gold with Emily at 10 a.m.; Tai chi at 11 a.m.; Bingo at 1 p.m.; Movie at 1 p.m.

  • Housing families provides free legal services from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Call for appointment.
  • Jessica Phelan of Mystic Valley Elder Services is available from 12:30 to 1:30. Drop in.
  • Silver Solidarity with Nike from at 1 p.m. Trivia, snacks and prizes.

Sisters in Sweat Exercise Group at 9:30 a.m. at West Medford Community Center Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Walking and other self-led, low impact activities.

Wheetle: A Little Wagon with a Big Heart story time at 10:30 a.m. at Moon and Back Bookstore.

Medford economic assessment study presentation at noon (12 p.m.) at Medford Public Library.

Family Story Time at 3:30 p.m. at Medford Public Library. For children between the ages of 3 and 7 to explore new concepts with books and songs. Parents and caregivers welcome to join in.

Tween Graphic Novel Club at 3:30 p.m. at Medford Public Library for readers in grades 5-8. This month's book selection is Maker Comics: Survive in the Outdoors by Mike Lawrence. Register.

Board of Assessors meeting at 4 p.m. at City Hall and via Zoom.

Hormel Stadium Commission at 5 p.m. at City Hall and via Zoom.

Adam Kinzinger: Solomont Speaker Series at 5:30 p.m. in the Cabot Intercultural Center at Tufts. Registration required for in-person or virtual. Kinzinger served on the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol and is the author of Renegade: Defending Democracy and Liberty in Our Divided Country.

Medford Community Chorale rehearsals are at First Baptist Church in Medford Square at 6 p.m. for youth/young adults and at 7 p.m. for the full chorus. Auditions are not required. All welcome.

Joint meeting of City Council and School Committee at 6 p.m. in City Hall and via Zoom. On the agenda is the annual budget process.

Downsizing 101 at 6:30 p.m. at Medford Public Library with Realtor Jennifer Keenan. Register.

True Story Theater Performance at 6:30 p.m. at Medford Family Network Family Center. Free performance that allows parents and caregivers an opportunity to share stories.

Civic Auditoriums and Convention Center Commission meeting at 6:30 p.m. via Zoom. On the agenda: Facilities manager, fire alarm upgrade, gym floor replacement, Chevalier economic impact project, marquee installation, and wayfinding study.

Trivia Wednesdays at 7 p.m. at The Ford Tavern. Fast-paced trivia with Kevin Richman.

City Council Planning and Permitting Committee meeting at 7 p.m. in City Hall and via Zoom to discuss Zoning Ordinance updates.

Prewn/Lane live music at 7 p.m. at Deep Cuts.

Country Line Dancing 7:30-10:30 p.m. at Great American Beer Hall.

Tufts University Wind Ensemble – A Masquerade Ball: Ritual, Dance, and Illusion at 8 p.m. in Distler Performance Hall at Tufts.
