The Medford Housing Resource Fair is tonight at City Hall from 6 to 8:30 p.m. for residents to learn about resources offered by the city and by local organizations. It will be moderated by Erika DeRoche of Housing Medford, and speakers include Dariela Villón-Maga of DVM Housing Partners, Gabe Ciccariello of Medford Housing Authority, and Nick Pittman of LISC Massachusetts.
There will be a moderated panel discussion about affordable housing, and many organizations will be on hand to offer information.
Also happening tonight are two high school building project meetings:
- The full High School Building Committee meets from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the High School, via Zoom, on TV and via streaming channels.
- The Construction Manager at Risk Selection Subcommittee meets at 4 p.m. at the High School.
Newsletter survey: Your responses
Thank you to everyone who took the survey about the newsletter, how often it should run and what should be included. About half of you said you like the daily newsletter, and half of you said you would like it to run less frequently, with many saying maybe 2-3 times per week would be good.
We are going through all the responses and will come up with a plan. Stay tuned.
One of the things some of you suggested is for us to run information about events before the day they happen. We hear you on that. We hope to have a rolling calendar up and running on our website soon, and in the meantime, we're running screenshots of a week's worth of municipal meetings and events, library activities, and Medford Family Network activities.
For example, here is the screenshot of municipal meetings and events for September 21-26. Just go to the city's website, medfordma.org, to get the details on the ones in which you are interested:
Dropping today
Nell sat down with Medford Public Library's new direct, Sam Sednak, who has a painting of former Medford resident Fanny Farmer on the wall in her office. The painting used to live in City Hall. From Nell's story:
"Farmer," says Sednak, "is an inspiration, a self-educated woman who suffered a stroke at 16 while attending Medford High School but overcame complications that left her disabled and went on to a career as a teacher and cookbook author."
In the works
- Zoning: Chris Stevens will have an update on Boston Avenue.
- Run Medford: The event is Friday and Saturday, September 25-26. We'll have a preview of the event, and a reminder about road and lane closures for Saturday.
- High School building: Nell will have the latest on the committee's efforts to bring the costs down.
- Oktoberfest: The Medford Chamber of Commerce Oktoberfest is coming up on October 3. We'll have a preview and an update on any road closures.

Senior Center events and activities: ChairFit Rhythm at 9:30 a.m.; knit and crochet at 10 a.m.; core and balance at 10:30 a.m.; international culture at 1 p.m.; educational talk on "10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer's" at 1 p.m. – call 781-396-6010 to reserve your seat.
Medford Public Library activities: The library has a number of drop-in activities today, which means you do not have to register. These include Baby Lapsit at 9:30 a.m., Play Dough Club at 3:30 p.m. for kids ages 2-5, notary sessions at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. for people to have documents notarized, a volunteer information session for teens at 6:30 p.m., and quiet makerspace time from 6 to 8 p.m. The morning ESOL class requires registration.
Medford Family Network activities: MFN has two drop-in activities today, Playgroups at the Park – Cummings from 9 to 11 a.m. and Drop-in Playtime from 12 to 4 p.m. at the MFN Family Center. Registration is required for the Dinosaur Themed Playgroup at 10 a.m. and the Nature Walk – Stroller/Wheelchair Friendly at 1 p.m. (Registration for Playful by Nature has already closed.)
Crossings: Lives in Motion Book Club from 12 to 1 p.m. in the Interfaith Center at Tufts for a discussion about the histories of colonial and global diasporas. Snacks provided. RSVP.
Go Mustangs! Home and away games for the mustangs today:
- Home: Freshman, JV, and varsity girls volleyball teams vs. Lynn Classical; JV and varsity girls soccer teams vs. Malden High.

Veteran and First Responder Recovery Group meets at 7 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Medford. All veterans and first responders are welcome on a drop-in basis.
World Poetry Salon from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Arts Collaborative Medford. Hosted by Gary Roberts, who is a poet and co-founder of ACM, this free session is open to everyone interested in poetry. It will focus on the works of Aimé Césaire of Martinique and Derek Walcott of Saint Lucia.
SNAX on WAX: All 45s All Night beginning at 7 p.m. at Deep Cuts. Spinning power pop, new wave, garage rock, glam, and indie rock.
