Snow emergency declared in Medford... again
Just when you thought it was safe to dream of spring ...
Wasn't it just yesterday, and last week and maybe even the week before that the City of Medford declared a snow emergency. Well in the winter that just won't go away, here is one more.
City officials have declared a snow emergency to go into effect at 5 p.m. on Sunday, February 22, 2026. City Hall and all city buildings will be closed on Monday, February 23 due to the snow. Trash, recycling and composting will not be picked up on Monday, February 23. Collection will be delayed one day for the rest of the week.
Parking restrictions will go into effect at 5 p.m., including:
· On secondary roads, parking is allowed on the ODD side of the street only. Cars parked on the even side of the street during snow emergencies will be ticketed and towed (unless the street has been granted an exemption by the Traffic Commission. See the full list at www.medfordma.org/snow).
· On main arteries, there is NO PARKING allowed on either side of the street. There is signage posted on these main arteries, and a full list of streets is available at www.medfordma.org/snow. If you live on a main artery, you may park on a secondary road even if it is permit parking, as these restrictions are temporarily lifted during a snow emergency. Once the snow emergency is lifted, parking enforcement will resume as usual.
Shoveling Information
· Per City Ordinance, residents must clear their sidewalks within 8 hours of daylight after snowfall.
· Keep the sidewalks clear of snow and ice to a minimum passage of 36 inches and treat the sidewalk with calcium chloride pellets or other suitable material to prevent ice build-up.
· Clear area within 36 inches of fire hydrants within or abutting the sidewalk that abuts the owner’s property
· Make sure to clear openings at corners, crosswalks, curb cuts and fire hydrants so pedestrians and emergency personnel can access areas efficiently.
· PLEASE DO NOT shovel snow or ice into the street.
· If you need assistance with shoveling, the city publishes a list of available shovelers at www.medfordma.org/snow, or by calling the Medford Council on Aging at 781-396-6010. Available shoveling assistance is limited, so please refrain from using this list unless you or a loved one are elderly and/or are physically unable to shovel.
For all snow information, visit www.medfordma.org/snow.
Also, keep an eye on your family, friends and neighbors, particularly if they might be in need of some help or just need a check in. And if you are shoveling, take breaks, drink lots of water and be careful out there.
And send us your snow photos!! We know you're taking them – pets, kids, snow people, hardworking shovelers and plow drivers, pretty trees and silly fun – we'd love to see them and share them. Send them to gottaknowmedford@gmail.com, and don't forget to credit the photographer!
