Sharell Sanders is understandably excited about the Mustangs' postseason push.

After a successful regular season run, the first-year Medford High girls basketball coach is prepping her squad for its toughest test to date, a spot in the MIAA State Tournament. The 34 seeded Mustangs tip-off against 31 seed Peabody in preliminary round action of the Division 1 bracket Tuesday, Feb. 24, at 6 p.m.

The winner will then take on second-seed Bishop Feehan (17-4) in the round of 32 Feb. 27 at 7 p.m.

This marks the fourth consecutive year Medford has reached the tournament. The new coach is happy to maintain the squad’s upwards trajectory.

“It feels great,” said Sanders. “I’m incredibly proud of the growth and accomplishments this group has made in year one. They’ve bought in, competed, and continued to raise the standard. No matter what happens, the foundation has been set, and the future of Medford Mustangs basketball is extremely bright.”

Medford takes on a talented Tanners squad that finished the year at 14-8 in the Northeast Conference. They hope to utilize its home court advantage.

“They bring a lot of versatility,” said Sanders, noting two Peabody players have already committed to college recruiters. “It speaks to their talent level. [Peabody] puts pressure on you in different ways. They like to run and jump to create turnovers. In the half court. They’ll space you out, attack downhill, and find shooters. They’re disciplined and talented.”

Despite its underdog status, Medford appear determined to get the job done.

“It starts with valuing the basketball on both ends and defending with pride until we secure the rebound,” said Sanders. “We can’t give them second chances or easy run-outs. Most importantly, we have to trust and believe in the work we’ve put in all season. When we show up and truly compete, we usually like the outcome.”

Leading the way for the Mustangs this season are senior co-captains Joy Riccioli and Beckey Casey.

A tireless guard, Riccioli is the definition of leading by example. According to her coach, her impact doesn’t necessarily show up in the box scores but completely shifts momentum.

“She’s the one taking charges, getting deflections, coming up with steals, crashing the boards, and knocking down big shots when we need them most,” said Sanders. “Joy embraces the gritty, selfless work, the hustle plays, the extra effort, the winning plays. She understands that championships are built on the little things, and she does them consistently. Her energy and toughness change games.”

The vocal leader of the group, Casey carries herself with a maturity beyond her years.

“Becky’s the steady voice when emotions run high and the one who pulls everyone back in when things start to drift,” said Sanders. “She understands when it’s time to have fun and when it’s time to lock in. She sets the tone for accountability, focus, and composure. Her leadership keeps the team grounded and connected.”

The duo fronts an impressive ensemble that endured many lineup changes, further testing their durability. From guards Emma Malerba, Sienna Fauci, and Ruby Andreasen, to Lia Marino, Kat Riccioli, and senior forward Olivia O’Brien, each player has risen to the occasion when called upon.

“Our depth has been a huge strength,” said Sanders. “They’ve all stepped up in different roles, bringing energy, defense, smart play, and timely scoring whenever we’ve needed it.”

After playing her freshman year on the JV team last season, Fauci stepped into the starting point guard spotlight. The sophomore sharpshooter has relished the role leading the Mustangs in scoring.

“But it’s more than just points,” said Sanders. “Sienna shows up and competes every single day. Her athleticism, confidence, and consistency have brought a whole new dynamic to our team.”

Freshmen Leah Rosa and Nadia Purifory have given the team an added boost of youthful exuberance. The pair provide veteran-like confidence, adding their unique strengths to the team’s style of play.

“Everyone has stayed ready, embraced their role, and contributed,” said Sanders. “That’s what makes this group special.”
