Happy Tuesday, everybody. The free Hoops and Hope basketball clinic for boys and girls is coming up at the end of the month. We have some information on that, plus a run-down of today's happenings.
The 10th Annual Hoops and Hope basketball clinic for boys and girls is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 30, at Dugger Park. If you're not familiar with the event, go to hoopsandhope.org to see photos and video from past years.
Professionals from the NBA and the WNBA are the guest coaches for the clinic, which is free for the kids. Here is how the organizers describe it:
"Going on our 10th year, Hoops and Hope is more than a basketball clinic, it’s a day of empowerment, connection, and community. Led by NBA and local leaders, this free event brings youth together through the game we all love while inspiring them on and off the court."
In addition to the youth clinics, the event includes high school girls’ and boys’ basketball tournaments, food trucks, music, and a family-friendly activities area.
The event is also a fundraiser that supports programming at the West Medford Community Center and causes that honor the memory of Krystle Campbell, the Medford native who was killed in the Boston Marathon Bombing.

Senior Center events and activities: Chairfit Rhythyms at 9:30 a.m.; knit and crochet at 10 a.m.; core and balance at 10:30 a.m.; international culture at 1 p.m.
- Food Pantry – the pantry is open at the Senior Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The bags will be prepackaged and filled with nonperishable items, produce, dairy and sometimes meat. You must have your Senior Center ID with you to check in. The filled bags are heavy, so bring a cart or other means to help carry them home. Bring a clean re-usable bag that you can leave for the next food pantry.
Playgroups at the Park from 9 to 11 a.m. at Carr Park. Hosted by Medford Family Network, the event features art, music, and movement activities, parachute play, bubbles, balls, and storytelling.
Baby Lapsit at 9:30 a.m. at Medford Public Library. Drop-in storytime with songs, rhymes, and gentle movement activities for babies up to 24 months old and parents and caregivers.
Sewing Machine Badge Class at 3 p.m. at Medford Public Library for adults and teens 16+ two get certified to use the MakerSpace sewing machines. Register.
Kids Drawing at 3:30 p.m. at Medford Public Library for kids ages 8-12 to work on their drawing skills. All levels welcome. Registration required.
3D Printing Workshop for Teens at 3:30 p.m. at Medford Public Library for teens in middle school and high school who have not completed a 3D printing workshop at the library. Registration is required.
National Night Out from 5 to 8 p.m. at Hormel Stadium, hosted by the Medford Police Department. The free event brings police, Medford residents, and local businesses and organizations together for community-building. There will be free giveaways, free food, K9 demos, live performances, obstacle courses, lawn games, touch-a-truck and more.
NAACP Mystic Valley Branch Environmental Justice Committee meeting at 5:30 p.m. via Zoom. If you are interested in learning more, attending a meeting or joining the committee, email ej@mva-naacp.org.
City Council Committee of the Whole meeting at 6 p.m. at City Hall, via Zoom, on TV, and on live-streams. There will be a presentation on the "Affordable Housing Linkage Nexus Study."
Teen Maker Night from 6 to 8 p.m. at Medford Public Library for teens in middle school and high school to learn, create, break, and build things in the MakerSpace. Registration required.
Board Game Night for Adults from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Medford Public Library. The library will have a selection of games available, but you are welcome to bring your own to share.
Read the Rainbow: LGBTQIA+ Book Group from 7 to 8:30 p.m. All are welcome to read and discuss literary and non-fiction works by and about the LGBTQ+ community. This month's selection is, "The Lilac People," by Milo Todd. Registration is appreciated.
City Council meeting at 7 p.m. at City Hall, via Zoom, on TV, and on live-streams. Agenda includes a resolution in remembrance of John Westwater, committee reports, items related to the upcoming election, appropriation requests from the mayor, a resolution to "support Tufts facilities workers bargaining for a fair contract," and a resolution to update the noise ordinance.
Veteran and First Responder Recovery Group meets at 7 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Medford. All veterans and first responders are welcome on a drop-in basis.
Trivia Night from 7 to 9 p.m. at Medford Brewing. Teams of 2 to 6 players will compete in a traditional 6-round trivia quiz.
Wicked 80s all-vinyl featuring DJ Panda runs from 7 to 10 p.m. at Deep Cuts.
Sunflowers a la Van Gogh paint night from 7 to 10 p.m. at The Great American Beer Hall with Sampaio Boston Arts. Purchase tickets in advance. All materials will be provided.
