Good morning, Medford, Monday, July 20

We have a few PSAs for you this morning:

1. The Medford Police Department's Junior Police Academy, which is in its second week, will be getting a visit from the Mass. State Police Air Wing today, and a helicopter will be landing on the field behind the High School. There is no emergency. It's part of the Junior Police Academy program. Our feature photo today is of the visit from the Air Wing on the first day of this year's program, July 13. You can follow this year's program and see photos on the Medford Police Facebook page. 2. The MBTA Red Line service will be suspended between Alewife and Park Street for 10 consecutive days, starting July 21, so upgrades can be made to the tracks, signals, etc. The mayor's office put out an alert on the homepage of the website. The trains will be replaced with free and accessible shuttle buses that will make all stops between Alewife and Park Street. This is expected to cause heavy traffic in the city of Cambridge.
3. Immigration is on the agenda for tonight's School Committee meeting. The committee will discuss two resolutions: one to continue supporting children and adults in the school system regardless of race, ethnic background, national origin and immigration status and the other to thank lawmakers for their efforts to protect immigrants through legislation. The meeting is expected to begin about 5 p.m. The committee is meeting in executive session at 4:15 p.m.

Now, let's talk about events and activities today. It's likely we'll see some rain today, so plan accordingly. Most of today's happenings will be inside, but a few are outside, such as Paddle Boston from the Condon Shell, Medford Family Network outdoor play at Magoun, and ultimate Frisbee pickup at Tufts Park.

Senior Center Activities: dominoes/cribbage at 10 a.m.; gentle yoga at 10 a.m.; Al-anon support group at 10:30 a.m.; chair yoga at 11 a.m.; whist for all levels at 12:30 p.m.; country line dancing at 12:45 p.m.; chair volleyball at 2 p.m.

Sisters-in-Sweat Exercise Group at 9:30 a.m. at West Medford Community Center. Walking and other self-led, low impact activities.

Paddle Boston – Medford from 12 to 8 p.m. at the Condon Shell, weather permitting. Walk-up anytime to rent a boat. Limited advanced reservations also available. Last boat goes out at 7 p.m. All boats must be returned by 8 p.m.

Outdoor Play with Cindy from 2 to 4 p.m. at Magoun Park for children ages 4 and 5 and caregivers. Interactive activities include circle time, problem solving activities, games we used to play.

Intro to Embroidery from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at Medford Public Library for tweens in grades 5-8 to learn the basics of embroidery by making summer flowers using buttons and embroidery floss. All materials will be provided. Registration required.

Boston AI Network Association meetup from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at The Great American Beer Hall. All are invited, from professionals to people just curious about AI, for networking, learning, and sharing ideas.

School Committee Meeting at 5 p.m. via Zoom, TV, and streaming channels. Agenda includes: introduction of new district-wide staff; grade configuration update; presentation of Student Advisory Council; MSBA update; resolution thanking the legislature for securing appropriations for Medford schools/children in the supplemental budget and in the FY2027 state budget; resolutions to continue supporting children and adults in the school system regardless of race, ethnic background, national origin and immigration status, and to thank senators Warren and Markey and congresswomen Clark and Pressley for their efforts to protect immigrants through legislation.

• The committee is meeting in executive session at 4:15 p.m. to discuss strategy for Massachusetts Teachers Association litigation. The regular committee meeting is expected to begin at approximately 5 p.m.

Ultimate Frisbee pickup from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Tufts Park with Davis Square Ultimate. RSVP.

MakerSpace Drop-In from 6 to 8 p.m. at Medford Public Library. For adults and teens 16+.

CAD Skill Share from 6 to 8 p.m. at Medford Public Library for adults to drop in and work on CAD projects and ask library volunteer Hanjoo for advice and troubleshooting help.

Visit with Jojo the Therapy Dog from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Medford Public Library. Register and reserve your 15-minute slot to visit with Jojo.

Energy and Environment Committee meeting from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Agenda includes member updates, city updates, Brenda Pike's farewell projects, and Harvest Your Energy Festival planning.
