Happy Friday, everybody. In addition to the GKM monster calendar, we've got submission guidelines for you for letters to the editor. As we get deeper into the election cycle, we suspect many of you will want to submit opinion pieces. And, we welcome them.
"Gotta Consider This" is the opinion section of the GKM website and it includes letters to the editor and opinion columns. With the primary around the corner, the general election coming up in November, and nine questions appearing on the ballot, we anticipate many of you will want to submit letters or columns. And, we welcome them.
Here are the basic guidelines for submitting:
- We welcome opinion pieces on a wide range of topics and issues that are important to Medford, its residents, officials, employees, and business owners.
- We will not publish pieces that are part of a letter-writing campaign that uses a form letter or template.
- When you submit your opinion piece, please include your address (street and city/town). Only the city/town will be published. The submissions of Medford residents take priority.
- You must include your phone number with your submission so we can call you to verify. Your phone number will not be published.
- You are welcome to send a photo. Please include the photographer's name and contact information.
- Submissions may be edited for length and clarity.
- Submissions will be published at our discretion.

Senior Center Activities: Walking Club at 9:30 a.m.; Latin dance with Judit at 10:30 a.m.; Chinese/English class at 11 a.m.; Haitian Senior Social and Activity Group at 1:30 p.m.
Sisters in Sweat Exercise Group at 9:30 a.m. at West Medford Community Center. Walking and other low-impact activities for seniors.
Red Cross Blood Drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Medford Public Library. Register for a time slot via the Red Cross website.
Paddle Boston – Medford from 12 to 7:30 p.m. at the Condon Shell, weather permitting. (Saturday and Sunday hours are 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.) Walk-up anytime to rent a boat. Limited advanced reservations also available. Last boat goes out at 6:30 p.m. All boats must be returned by 7:30 p.m.
Grandma Crafts: Beginner Cross Stitch at 3:30 p.m. at Medford Public Library for teens in middle school and high school to learn how to cross stitch and begin a project of their choice. All materials will be provided. Registration required.
MakerSpace Drop-In from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Medford Public Library for adults and teens age 16+ to work on personal projects or ask the in-house expert about how to use the space and equipment.
Holy Wave, Little Miss Echo, and Tequila Sirens perform live beginning at 7 p.m. at Deep Cuts.
DJ Lee Mastermind from 9 to 11:59 p.m. in the main room at The Great American Beer Hall.
Saturday, August 8
Baby Wearing Support Group at 9:30 a.m. at Medford Public Library with consultant Christy Reisig. Participants can try new carrier styles, ask questions, and meet fellow baby-wearing parents. Registration required.
Family Story Time at 10 a.m. at Medford Public Library for children ages 3-7 to explore new concepts with books and songs. Parents and caregivers are welcome to join in.
Redemption Hill Church Young Adult Field Day from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Carr Park. RSVP.
Chess Club from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Medford Public Library. Medford Chess Club meets in the Cafe Space at the Library on Saturdays at 10 a.m. in July and August.
Spanish Fun Time for children ages 1-4 at 10:30 a.m. at Medford Public Library. Children are encouraged to fully engage with the movement and games and to use as much Spanish vocabulary as possible. Registration required.
Water Chestnut Monitoring Paddle from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with Mystic River Watershed Association beginning at the Condon Shell. Participants must be 6 years or older. Kids ages 6-11 must be under the direct supervision of a parent or guardian. MyRWA will provide the kayaks, paddles, life jackets, and gloves. Registration is required.
Spanish Fun Time for children ages 5-11 at 11 a.m. at Medford Public Library. Registration required.
Brews, Beats & Bites with Medford Brewing from 1 to 5 p.m. at Clippership Pop-Up Park. Family-friendly event with live music, food trucks, and craft beer.
Story time at 2:30 p.m. at Moon and Back Bookstore. The book will be "Turtle with a Toolbox," words by Beth Ferry and pictures by Dudolf.
Red Blends with Mark the Wine Guy from 3 to 5 p.m. at Kappy's Medford. RSVP.
Boston Glory playoff game vs. New York Empire at 7 p.m. at Hormel Stadium. Gates open at 6 p.m. There will also be a beer garden, food truck, and kid zone.
Oneida, Kinski, and Tyler and the Names perform live beginning at 7 p.m. at Deep Cuts.
Full Throttle performs from 9 to 11:59 p.m. at The Great American Beer Hall.
Sunday, August 9
Guided Nature Walk from 9:15 to 11:30 a.m. at Flynn Rink with Friends of the Fells. Jeff Adams leads the group to identify the plants, such as wildflowers, shrubs and trees, that shape the local ecosystem. Register to reserve a spot. Meet at the kiosk at Flynn Rink.
Mystic Walkers at 11 a.m. at Hormel Stadium. All ages and abilities are welcome to join. The group will decide where the walk will go.
Kier Byrnes Freedom Runners at 11 a.m. starting at Medford Brewing. Choose from several different loops or create your own. All are welcome.
First Baptist Church Coffee Hour at 12 p.m. Informal coffee hour in Memorial Hall following services.
Medford Historical Society and Museum is open on Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. Current exhibit is, "1776 and beyond," but there are also many other resources to explore.
Spirit of India from 3 to 7 p.m. at Columbus Park. United India Association of New England hosts a family-friendly carnival festival and international youth day with live entertainment, food, music, carnival games and activities, local vendors and more.
Somergloom: Eight Foot Manchild, GUHTS, Hemlok, and Spirit Hotel perform live beginning at 5 p.m. at Deep Cuts.
