Good morning, Medford, Friday, April 10
It may have just stopped (we hope) snowing in Medford, but it isn't too early to start talking about mosquitoes and a notice from the Board of Health about spraying. Also, we have a rundown on events and activities Friday through Sunday.
We hope your Friday is off to a great start. It might be a bit cloudy today, but temps are expected to go into the 60s. We would say TGIF, except that a lot of people will be working Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to bring you lots of events and activities. And, we'll get to that.
First, however, a heads-up: The East Middlesex Mosquito Control Project will perform aerial spraying of an insecticide to control mosquitoes.
The Board of Health announced that one helicopter application will take place between April 21 and May 1. The wetlands that may be treated are near Wright’s Pond, Bellevue Pond, and Winford Way. However, the BOH says residents do not need to take any special precautions.
A biological larvicide commonly called Bti (Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis) will be applied in granular form by a helicopter flying low over the wetlands.
Bti is a naturally occurring bacterium found in soils, and, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, it is not harmful to people, plants, or wildlife, and it does not harm insects outside of the target species, which are mosquitoes, blackfly, and fungus gnats. It works by killing the larvae.
If you have any concerns or questions, call the East Middlesex Mosquito Control Project at 781-899-5730.
Also, Zero Waste Medford is teaming up with Tufts University to host a free (donations welcome) clothing swap, and it is open to everyone. You are welcome to donate and/or pick up clothing.
The swap will take place Monday, April 20, from 12 to 4 p.m., at 200 Packard Ave., Medford, on the campus of Tufts University. Clothing Drop Off is from 12 to 2 p.m. Pick-up will be from 1 to 4 p.m.
